This Privacy Policy covers data protection with regards to the services, activities and online presence of Take Back Water.
We generally try to collect as little personal data as possible, but in order to run the campaign, we need to handle some. For example, when you join the campaign we ask for your first name, email address and where in the country you live.
This policy is about how we’ll handle that information.
Lawful basis
Any organisation or group that handles personal data needs to have a lawful basis for handling that data.
Our lawful basis for using data that you give us is based on two principles: 'Meaningful consent' and 'legitimate interest'.
'Meaningful consent' means that you have explicitly consented to the reason for using your data, for example by subscribing to our mailing list or giving us your name and address while ordering leaflets.
'Legitimate interest' means that we handle data because we have genuine and legitimate reason and we are not harming any of your rights and interests. For example, if you order leaflets, we might want to keep a record of where leaflets have been ordered to so that look we understand how the campaign is going in different parts of the country.
The legitimate interest basis for handling data that we have is building a mass-movement of people to campaign for public ownership and against excessive bills.
Some examples of when we might use the legitimate interest basis to handle data provided to us are:
- Offering you guidance on how to participate in the campaign based on your location and circumstances.
- Analysing information about who supports the campaign to develop our strategy and get people more involved.
- Publishing anonymised statistics to demonstrate the scale of support the campaign.

Take Back Water is currently an unincorporated association run entirely by volunteers. We may in the future seek to incorporate as a company limited by guarantee if we feel it's needed for the campaign to succeed.
If we do this, or are succeeded by another organisation for other resons, the data you provide us and responsibility for handling that data will be transferred to the new organisation as the data controller. In providing us with your information, you are agreeing to us transferring that data to any successor organisation, and consenting to that organisation using your personal data with the same legitimate interest as the unincorporated association.
We will inform you via our email list if we do this and give you the option of opting out.
